Rainy weather is really very enjoyable until we welcome the fruit flies. My mother hates fruit flies and has extracted many ways to get rid of them. My parents belong to a brown family background, and brown parents mostly follow the remedies so-called “Totkay” to get rid of such small problems. Following them, I have learned and experienced many ways to get rid of fruit flies and to be very honest, I am going to share my personal experience in this article.
08 Tricks To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies
1. Preparing a spray:
Things required:
- Bowl
- Stove
- Water
- Phenyl Tablets
- Vinegar
- Cloves
- Baking Soda
- Spraying Bottle
Take a glass of water in a bowl and boil it on a low flame. You can also use geyser water or boil it on a stove; up to you guys.
Precaution: While preparing this spray, keep children away.
Take a packet of phenyl tablets mostly used for the toilets. You have to crush the tablets. You can cover them in a piece of paper and beat them slightly using a brick or a hard thing. I will not recommend grinding because it is risky.
Now, add the grinded phenyl into a bowl. The second and necessary thing you have to add is three to four pieces of Cloves. Add cloves to the boiling water. Add a teaspoon of salt in the same boiling water. Add a teaspoon of baking soda inside the bowl, having the powdered phenyl. Add two tablespoons of liquid Dettol solution. Add four tablespoons of white vinegar. Remember, all these things are easily available in the local stores near our houses. Now, take a disposable spoon and mix the mixture in the bowl.
Question: Why did we take the boiling water?
Answer: The phenyl solution mixed with the vinegar solution and baking soda starts getting hard and solid, that is why boiled water is being used.
Add the boiled water inside the bowl with the phenyl, baking soda and vinegar mixture. Now, wait for almost two to three minutes. A mixture of one week is ready to use inside the house. Add the solution to a spraying bottle carefully. Spray the areas where there are more chances of fruit flies like:
- Dining Room
- Drawing Room
- TV Lounge
- Bed Rooms
- etc.
2. Lemon and Cloves:
Most fruit flies are found near the dining table. So what we can do easily is, take a lemon and cut it in half. Take four to five pieces of cloves and fix them inside the lemon on the pulp side just shown in the picture. Place the lemon inside the fruit bucket. It will help repel the fruit flies.
3. Mosquito Coil Powder:
Take a mosquito-repelling coil and tear it into small pieces in the bowl. You can also use the remaining used pieces of mosquito coils, not necessary to take the new one. Now crush the small pieces of coil inside the bowl. Now add one big spoon of white sugar inside the bowl and mix it with powdered coil. Let the mixture dry. Now, throw the powder in the places where fruit flies are mostly found. It is observed that this powder helps get rid of fruit flies for more than one week.
4. Cinnamon and Water
Boil some cinnamon sticks in a pot on your stove to discourage flies from hanging around. Flies hate the smell of cinnamon but it will make your house smell like you’ve been cooking something delicious all day. While boiling the cinnamon sticks, you will observe that slightly and slowly the flies are getting outside of the house with the smell of cinnamon.
5. Use Of Lemon
This is another very effective way to keep the kitchen counter clean and fruit fly free. Wipe your counter as you can normally do and squeeze half lemon and wipe with a microfiber cloth. You will observe that fruit flies will sit everywhere but not on your kitchen counter. It is a creative thing for two reasons. One, it takes off all the grease of your counter and leaves it fresh smelling and second it definitely sends fruit flies away. This method could not keep flies away for longer.
6. PLastic Bag
This is an effective as well as an interesting way to keep flies away from doors and windows. Fill a clear plastic bag with water. Hang these bags around doors and windows to stop flies from coming inside. This works because of the way fruit flies’ eyes work. This bag reflects multi-directional lights, which confuse flies’ eyesight, and it heads the other way. Many fruit stands and vendors use these plastic bags hanging on the stalls. This is to keep flies away from the fruits.
7. Apple Vinegar and Dish Soap
First of all, pour a 1/4th cup of apple cider vinegar into a container. Now add a couple pumps of dish soap inside the vinegar. Seal the upper part of the container with the plastic wrapper. Poke a couple of holes with chopsticks or toothpicks. You will see the magic, after a few minutes, flies will get inside and will be found dead.
8. Fruit Trap
It’s the season for fruit flies, so before they take over your kitchen, slice a few pieces of banana and mix them with some of your leftover mango peels. Find yourself a couple of small containers and add the fruit. Now, just stretch a piece of plastic wrap over the top and use something like the tip of a chopstick to poke a small hole in the center that’s just bigger than the fly. Now you can set it and forget it. Within a few minutes, the Flies will be checking things out and once one goes in you can be sure his friends will follow. Within a couple of days, they’ll all be having a rock and fruit party, and now you can take the lid of the container and press it on, sealing them inside. Now, you are the Lord of the Flies.
